The Clash Of The Titans : HTC One V/S Samsung Galaxy S4

Ok, so this one's not mine. I was reading newspaper today and just found the article. Full credits goes to the Times Of India's writer Javed Anwar. Just wanted to share with you guys out there.
I just want to thank him for writing such an informative article. I thank you sir on behalf on UltraLap.

Champ V/S Champ : Samsung Galaxy S4 V/S HTC One

The Galaxy S4 boasts some nifty software features. For example, Multi-window allows users to work on two apps in a single screen. Not all apps support this feature, but it's available for a few important ones such as Gmail, Chrome, Twitter, Messages and Youtube. Then there's Dual Shot, which allows a user to superimpose his stamp-sized image taken from the front camera on a scene shot with the rear camera. S Health is another feature that stands out. It allows a user to monitor his physical activity like walking or jogging throughout the day, and also shows the actual temperature and humidity in his surroundings. However, some features don't work as consistently as we would have liked, such as Air View, which allows a user to preview images without even touching the screen, and Air Gesture, which allows a user to take a call with a swiping gesture above the device. Still, the features that work are enough to make the S4 a more useful and handy device than other smartphones. Besides, the S4 allows for interchangeable batteries and expandable memory via a microSD card.

HTC has a history of excelling in product design. With the HTC One, the Taiwanese company is at its sparkling best. The phone is exquisitely designed using premium materials. Its unibody shell, fabricated out of aluminium alloy, feels tough, is wonderful to hold, and is resistant to fingerprints. Its curved back fits well in the hollow of your palms, and the device's chamfered edges give it a finish that feels superior to all other smartphones.

Another highlight of the HTC One is Blinkfeed - a dynamic homescreen widget that connects to various news services and your social network accounts to give you constant updates at all times.

SCREEN: If the screen size is the only criterion, the Galaxy S4 wins with its 5-inch screen when compared to the HTC One's 4.7 inches. But numbers alone don't define experience. In terms of quality, the displays on both the Galaxy S4 and the HTC One are excellent. Text looks sharp on both handsets due to their FullHD (1920x1080 pixels) resolution.

But there are a few subtle differences: The screen on the Galaxy S4 has very deep blacks, and is capable of richer colours. The screen on the HTC One, however, shows truer colours. It also offers better readability under direct sunlight and outdoor use.

Winner: Tie

BATTERY: The battery in both handsets lasts long enough to allow for a single day's use, which includes phone calls, 3G videos, web browsing, emails, social networking, some gaming and a little bit of photography.

Still, in absolute terms, on heavy use, the HTC One wins here with an average battery life of 13 to 14 hours, when compared to around 12 hours for the Galaxy S4. In actual usage, this means that you'll have to charge both devices every night.

Winner: HTC One

PERFORMANCE: The Galaxy S4 and the HTC One are superb performers, running demanding games like Dead Trigger with ease. Web browsing is smooth; GPS is fast and accurate; and 3G speeds are good. In our use, we consistently got over 7Mbps download speeds on both handsets.

The availability of 2GB RAM on both also means multi-tasking is effortless. Overall, however, the HTC One seemed better.

The S4 suffered from the occasional lag, especially while switching between tasks. This is not a deal-breaker and probably won't even be noticed by most users, but we definitely found the HTC One to be smoother.

Winner: HTC One

CALL QUALITY: The Galaxy S4 and the HTC One are premium phones and as such have no issues handling phone calls. Both feature noise cancellation for background sounds, and we found that we got excellent voice clarity during calls; the people we called could also hear us clearly.

Winner: Tie

MUSIC: Both phones handle digital music formats such as MP3, FLAC, M4A with ease. In terms of audio quality, we found the HTC One's Beats Audio to be better than Samsung's Adapt Sound tech.

Importantly, the HTC One has placed its speakers, called Boomsound, at the front; they are loud, and produce distortion-free sound even at high volume. Also, the HTC One has an FM receiver; the S4 doesn't. Winner: HTC One

VIDEO: The Galaxy S4 gets our nod here. While the HTC One had trouble with certain video formats like AVI at FullHD resolution, the Galaxy S4 handled the same clips like a champ. When used with a third-party app like MX Player, the S4 even handles FullHD MOV files with ease. Its larger screen, which produces rich colours, also makes watching videos on the Galaxy S4 more enjoyable.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy S4

CAMERA: The Galaxy S4 and the HTC One are very capable shooters. But in our use, we found the S4's 13MP camera to be a more consistent performer. The images shot with it are detailed, comprise good colours, and subjects appear in sharp focus. The S4 especially excels at close shots and is capable of shooting images that match the output of a good point and-shoot camera in good light.

In breaking away from the trend that 'more megapixels are better', the HTC One's main camera is only 4MP. Still, it is just as capable of good colour reproduction and sharp focus. It, however, loses out to the Galaxy S4 when it comes to the level of details.

In low-light, the HTC One performs marginally better, but if you use Galaxy S4's night mode, the difference between the two is negligible.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy S4

USER INTERFACE: The HTC One uses a proprietary UI called Sense, while Samsung calls its custom interface TouchWiz.

In terms of aesthetics, Sense looks better with its subdued and minimalistic design. TouchWiz, on the other hand, uses lots of widgets and is defined by its use of colours.

In terms of usability, we liked TouchWiz. The HTC One has just two physical buttons for navigation - Back and Home. The menu can be accessed through the settings option provided in various apps, while multi-tasking requires double-tapping Home.

Touchwiz uses three buttons - Back, Home and Menu - which is easier to use. It is also easier to customise your home screen and manage widgets here. Winner: Samsung Galaxy S4

So which one you should buy?

It's actually a tough call to make. Both the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One are fine devices in their own right. The S4 scores on software features and boasts a fantastic camera. The HTC One, on the other hand, is an elegant handset that you want to show off.

If aesthetics, music quality and battery life are important to you, pick the HTC One. If camera performance, videos and software features take precedence, get the Galaxy S4. Either way, you have a winner.

That said, we don't think either phone warrants a purchase if you already own a high-end handset.

If you are using a smartphone older than one year and feel you need better performance and features, both Galaxy S4 and HTC One are good options.

  • Design is just perfect
Lows :
  • Battery does not pay off
  • Large screen could posses a problem for people with small hands
  • The price is excess, it could have been between Rs.40K

Conclusion :
HTC butterfly is fantastic phone that delivers what is expected from it. We are very impressed with it's performance in all sectors. It is the real perfectionist. In few words - It is simply one of the best, high-end, devices till date we have tried our hands on. This device has achieved perfection in top priority sector's like premium feel, design, display and connectivity.
The only flaws we found with device are - the battery and the price. With a typical smartphone usage, the battery would no longer last a little over 10 hrs. Although, so solve this problem HTC has added a 'battery saver mode', but still after the use of this mode, it lasts no longer than 12-13 hrs. Another major drawback of this device is it's huge price, we definitely think it is over priced. In India if we see, it is not the best value-for-money product. We would advice to wait till the prices come down to around 40K or less, or opt one of the alternatives given below.

Alternatives for HTC Butterfly :  Apple iPhone 5, Nokia Lumia 920, Sony Xperia Z, Samsung Galaxy Note II, Nexus 4

What To Expect This MWC 2013

January might  have been the best month for the techie kind of people, as there was CES, but Feburary is definitely going to be the most exciting month for the mobile phone fans, when the Mobile World Congress ( MWC ) kicks off on 25th February in Barcelona.
With companies like HTC, Samsung, Sony, this year's MWC is going to be a thrill when these companies are going to put their best effort to bring out their latest products.
So here we are, as promised by us, to let you guys, out there, know what all is expected to happen this MWC. Here it goes....

HTC
HTC M7 has got a 13 MP camera
HTC is one of the best mobile players in the world, last year it showed us the glorious HTC One series, with HTC One X on top the charts.
2013, however, looks like being another good year for HTC, as we've already seen fairly concrete details of one of its new models leak.
HTC M7 leak's
We expect HTC to bring along its HTC M7 mobile, which, as we've previously seen, is believed to be a quad-core device with a 5-inch 1080p display and 13MP camera.

SAMSUNG
Smasung Galaxy S IV
Samsung is expected to showcase the much hyped Galaxy S IV. But even if it does not, there are many others android phones to be showcased. Earlier this week it launched Galaxy Grand, the same time Micromax announced it's A116 Canvas HD.
However, there's a small chance we may see something really exciting. Samsung's working on hardware powered by the new Tizen OS, a supposed Android rival that Samsung claims it'll be bringing to market some time in 2013.
It is rumoured that there will be new family members in the Note family, which currently have Galaxy Note 2 and the Galaxy 10.1. But the big question for Samsung is whether the Korean Giant will show off its Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, which will feature an 8-inch Super Clear LCD screen, 2GB of RAM, a 5MP camera and a 4,600mAh battery.
Galaxy Note 8
Galaxy Note III
There are also rumours that Galaxy Note III might be launched this MWC. Note III might be powered by an octa-core processor. Named the Exynos 5 Octa, uses ARM's big.LITTLE technology and combines a Cortex A7 with a Cortex A15 chip to gain increases in performance and energy efficiency. Samsung and ARM have claimed that the new processor doubles the performance of the Exynos 4 processor, while halving the power consumption. These new rumours originate from Korea Times, the same news organization that also claimed in December that the Galaxy Note III would come with a 6.3-inch display, an upgrade over the Note II's 5.5-inch screen, that itself was an increase over the original Note's 5.3-inch touchscreen.

SONY
While most of the companies saved their products to be released in MWC in Feb, Sony was the one which showcased it's waterproof Xperia Z and Xperia ZL.
Sony has a reputation of releasing their best product in CES and announcing a couple of smaller models on the same design.
The big question remains that whether we would witness a better phone that Xperia Z or Sony will follow the same hardware plan as last year's.
Xperia Tablet Z might be launched this MWC
Sony may also launch it's rumoured Xperia Tablet Z, which is said to be a companion to Xperia Z. The key spec for this new tablet, the Xperia Tablet Z, would be its thickness, which is rumored to be only 6.9 millimeters. That is already extremely slim for a smartphone, but when compared to other tablets, the Xperia Tablet Z could potentially be the thinnest of them all. Aside from that, the Xperia Tablet Z looks to be one that will pack a lot of muscle under the hood. The rest of the rumored spec sheet includes 1920 x 1200 full-HD resolution for the display, a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor clocked at 1.5 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 32 GB internal memory, an 8-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front camera, 4G LTE, NFC and a 6,000 mAh battery.
But Sony is yet to confirm that even if this tablet exists or not. But we think that if it is going to be there at the MWC '13, it's surely going to beat all others out there including the iPad from Apple.

LG
LG Optimus G
As far as LG is concerned, it officially has confirmed that "something new and impressive" will be there in the MWC. The confirmation came in the press conference in the CES earlier this month.
Rumours suggest that there might be a phone with 5.5-inch thickness that might be showcased. The phone is set to feature a full HD screen in that footprint, meaning a 1080p screen in the palm of your hand. NFC is also certain to be included given the brand has taken pains to show how it will launch interconnected home appliances and TV using the contact-less technology.
LG may also release it's glorious Optimus G.

Nokia Lumia 920 might get the PureView tech
NOKIA
Nokia is expected to release a line-up of 6 Lumia based mobile phone, including the Lumia 920. Rumours suggest that Nokia is working on a slimmer version of the Lumia 920, which would use an aluminium body to reduce the weight of it's hefty flagship phone. Some also suggest that Lumia 920 might come up with technology similar to that of PureView - the 41 MegaPixel camera. This rumor comes from Flavio Pic who revealed that this alleged device has been given the codenamed Project EOS.

HUAWEI
Huawei's really made a name for itself in the UK over the last year, thanks to its winning budget Ascend G300 and the recent Ascend G330 update, plus the powerful Ascend P1.
Huawei Ascend P2 leaked
Huawei, earlier this month, at the CES introduced the  Ascend D2 and Ascend Mate, so it's likely to elaborate more on these at MWC 2013 rather than announce many new phones. It's CEO Richard Yu recently slated that " we will be launching two more exciting innovative products at the MWC 2013".
If the leak is to be believed it's going to be the Ascend P2, a 5-inch phone with a quad-core processor. In fact, according to some recently released specifications, Huawei's Ascend P2 is already in the works and looks to improve upon the original in just about every way possible.
Most importantly, the leaked Ascend P2 specifications shows that it will purportedly run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and make use of a quad-core 1.8GHz Hisilicon K3V2 processor.
The supposed 5-inch screen will boast a 1,280 x 720 resolution, and the Ascend P2 is also believed to include a 13 megapixel rear camera plus a 1.3MP front-facing snapper.
All of those features are coupled with support for WiFi 802.11, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, mini USB 2.0, and network support for GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA and HSUPA, along with 2GB RAM and 8GB memory.

That's all from the World's Biggest and The Best Mobile Makers for now, but if we get any further information on any of the new products we will be posting it here.
